It is wise to start with a tree that has the basic frame work and growth pattern of what you want. Remember that it is very important that all cuts need to be made properly at nodes.
IF YOU WANT: A TREE WITH A LONG TRUNK: Remove branches at positions A, B, and C early in the life of the tree.
A MORE COMPACT TREE: Remove 3's.
A MORE UPRIGHT TREE: Remove 1's.
A MORE OPEN TREE: Remove 2's.
TO REGULATE HEIGHT OF A YOUNG, SMALL TREE: Remove 4 at position F.
If a strong central leader is desired remove upright stems competing with
4 at position F.
If a large top is to be removed always make cuts at a strong side branch.
Remove the leader by making the cut from 1 to 2. Always remove the weight
of the stem first by making a stub cut. Point 9 is the branch bark ridge
and 2 is directly across from 6. Point 6 is the beginning of the branch
bark ridge. Point 1 is to the inside of the branch bark ridge and 10 is
the branch collar. Number 7 will become the new leader when 8 is properly
removed.
Any cuts from 1 to 5, 1 to 4, 3 to 5, 3 to 2, and 3 to 4 are IMPROPER.
This fact sheet is only for YOUNG SMALL TREES.
