Myth 2.  Lots of mulch is good.

In reality, mulch in the common gradation we often apply, is good when applied in the right amounts in the right place.  Too much mulch, does more harm than good.  When mulch is too thick non-woody roots grow into the mulch.  This gradation of mulch dries out first, and when it does, the roots will die prematurely, i.e.,  before the abscission zone forms, thus leaving openings for micros that do nasty things to enter the tree.  When mulch is applied against the trunk, more injury results.  So, no, lots of mulch is not good.
