Myth 6. - Bark Mulch Is Food For The Soil.

While bark (outer) mulch does add to the makeup of the soil, it does not feed many soil microorganisms or organisms.  Outer bark, phellem, of trees is made up primarily of suberin.  Suberin is long chains of fatty acids.  While there is a carbon present, there is not much to offer the soil as far as food or energy goes.  Composted wood chips and leaves offer a good source of food for the soil.
