Today U.S. agribusiness uses about 33 times more pesticides than 50 years ago. And with the rise in pesticide use has come a rise in cancer rates. From 1950 to 1990, cancer incidence rose almost 50%.
Breast cancer rates increased 52% and prostate 134%. Still more and more known and suspected cancer-causing pesticides are used to grow our food. Some are legal, some are not. If you eat conventionally grown fruits and vegetables in this country, you consume toxic pesticides.
Our children are suffering the most. Since 1973, both childhood brain cancer and childhood leukemia incidence increased by a third. Cancer kills more children under the age of 14 than any other disease.
The time has come to put an end to this toxic assault on our families, our friends, farm workers, farmers, our environment and ourselves.

By the average child's first birthday, the combined cancer risk
from just 8 pesticides on 20 foods exceeds the EPA's acceptable risk standard.*
2.2 billion pounds of pesticides were applied in the U.S. in 1991-------8 pounds for every adult and child in the country.**
Approximately 20 U.S. and international studies have found that children of parents exposed to pesticides at work have major risk of contracting cancer.
At least 71 active ingredients in pesticides used on food crops are known to cause cancer in animals and humans.**
Millions of children in the United States receive up to 35 percent of their entire lifetime dose of some carcinogenic pesticides by age five. This figure was found using the EPA's own methodologies and cancer potency estimates and without considering children's increased sensitivity to chemicals.*
